Turtles are sad sad pets

Turtles are sad miserable pets – What makes them this way?

One of the most common misconception about turtles is that are hardy animals that can withstand dirty water – unlike fish.

The hardy part is correct. Turtles are indeed hardy animals and this is exactly what makes them miserable. They often endure horrible conditions in silence and (usually) an uninformed owner mistakens the conditions as okay – since the animal does not perish.

Death should not be the measure of tank conditions, but it is for many turtle keepers. Clean cycled water is a basic necessity for turtle husbandry. Surprisingly, even avid fish keepers seem to overlook this fact when it comes to turtles. I’ve met and spent many hours to explain this need to aquarists who have ample experience in fish keeping but not so much with turtles.

The notion that turtles do not need clean water as much as fish was strong in many minds. It’s well known that the human mind is full of logical fallacies and processing the extreme opposite of a specific info being ok is one of them. This was also heavily present among many turtle keepers in general as well. Many people have ended up on the idea that dirty water is ok for turtles because of the thought that turtles are not fish, thus they don’t die from poor water conditions.

Death should never be the measure of tank conditions. Turtles suffer in silence.

Turtles and fish alike live in clean rivers and lakes. They share the same habitat. Why should aquariums be any different?

Green Walk Aug 29th

The weather’s very capricious thus summer. It was pouring yesterday and it was cloudy in the morning and now very sunny in the afternoon. I have been waiting for a sunny weather for quite some time and this was my chance.

I headed out with Steve in my bucket.

I let Steve to freely roam the area.

It’s his choice what to do and where to go now.
